The Weather System

On the days that knock the power out.

Carolyn Petrosian

Some days the grief is just a gray sky. You notice it. It sits over everything. But you can still drive in it, still function, still get to the appointment on time. Those are the overcast days — a little heavier than usual, manageable.

Some days it’s a passing rain shower. It comes out of nowhere — a song on the radio, a milestone post from another mom — and you’re crying in the Target parking lot for four minutes, and then it passes and you keep going.

And then some days the storm rolls in without warning and it is not a shower. It is the kind of storm that knocks out the power and floods the road and you cannot go anywhere until it passes. You just have to wait it out, inside, in the dark, until the sky clears.

The sun always comes back. But some storms take longer than others.
